Superfood PB Banana and Cacao Green Smoothie
I love breakfast smoothies, a few of my favorites are Kale Banana Chia Hemp Superfood Smoothie, Strawberry Peanut Butter Swirl Smoothie Bowl and Skinny Green Tropical Smoothie.
I’ve been playing around with them all week and decided to try them in my smoothie. Here, I combined almond milk, peanut butter, a really ripe banana with a few drops of stevia along with a handful of spinach. Aside from all the health benefits associated with raw cacao which you can read more about here, this tasted great and was very satisfying.

This is my favorite smoothie! I add a little drizzle of honey, and 1/2 tablespoon of ground flaxseed. It’s SO good and it tastes like a treat! Thanks for giving us oodles of healthy and delicious recipes! Yum!
what size blender and brand blender did you use for such a small amount?
My wife and I love this smoothie (she has it every day). We’ve added dates for the sweetener, a little bit of kale and chia seed. When we first made it and looked at – we though ewww, green slime. Then tasted it – amazing!!!! Healthy and it tastes great – winning combo! Thanks Gina!
Not my favourite. Tasty ingredients, but blended tastes horrible
I suppose it’s healthy, so I will try to get used to it. My bad: I used frozen spinach, it was floating like threads in my smoothie, as the blender did not chop it at all.
Very yummy, no need to add sweeteners, as its sweet enough
i love cacao raw powder and love to make smoothie with cacao bliss.
Hi Gina- long time fan! Just ordered your Air Fryer and cookbook! Tried this recipe for the first time this week- OMG. I am new to smoothies. Could you post a recipe where you prepare smoothie ingredients and put them in the freezer so you can quickly make your smoothie on the way out the door? Thanks so much for all you do! My husband and I have lost over 100lbs. since August doing WW- but using all YOUR recipes!! xo Colleen
I haven’t used cocoa nibs in smoothies before. I was wondering if they are supposed to blend smoothly into the smoothie? I tried this recipe today and it had a nubby texture. I felt like I had to chew my drink. The smoothie was super tasty though.
Yum!
Added fresh blueberries, and skipped the sweetener. Honestly, don’t think any sweetener is needed even without the blueberries. Definitely an easy, healthy smoothie to keep on rotation.
I did not have cacao nibs so I had to adapt. I used 3/4 cup Almond Breeze unsweetened original almond milk, 1 cup ice, 1/2 banana, a handful of baby spinach, 2 Tbsp of chocolate flavored PB2, 1 tsp. of Penzeys Dutch Process High Fat Cocoa, and 15 grams of protein powder. The smoothie was very good; however, I may add another teaspoon of cocoa powder next time. 139 calories and 4 Points+ points in recipe builder.
Delicious! I use Fairlife skim milk for the same points value. I also used cacao powder since that’s what I had on hand; I suggest using less than a tablespoon of it since it’s more dense.
Ladies I do want to let you know this site has everything you need cocoa nibs are 12.99 lb …has much more need to check out www.nuts.com hope this helps some of you
Tried this for lunch today and it was like drinking a delicious chocolate milkshake. This will be my new go to snack/smoothie! Yumm! Thanks for another great recipe!
Can this be frozen?
This is a really delicious smoothie. Instead of cacao nibs, I use about 1 teaspoon of already ground cacao.
OMG! This was delicious. I added some frozen mango and skipped the cacao nibs. I think I drank it in less than 30 seconds!
This looks so tasty, great photography too. My smoothies have gotten kinda boring lately, and this is something I can throw into the rotation!
This was delish!! Tasted like an ice cream based shake!! Which is so good for a preggo like myself!! Any thoughts on using the cacao nibs when baking?
I clicked on the link above to price the cacao nibs…on the Nutiva site, 16 ounces is $18.99. Same brand, same size at Netrition.com is $15.49 🙂 I don't work for them, just love their site! Thanks for all the great recipes!
Skinny…. Can I have your vitamix?
Sounds delicious! I'm making this tomorrow! 😀

I love a good dessert smoothie! Banana, almond milk, nut butter and spinach are my go-to ingredients when I want something sweet. I'll have to try adding some cacao nibs next time, I've only ever used cocoa powder. Yum!
Made this last night. It was very yummy. It tasted just as good as the shake that I bought from Sonic that had 1200 calories!!
Yum yum! This is similar to something I make very often. So good 🙂

I've been wanting to try something new with cacao nibs and this smoothie was absolutely deeeelish! Thank you!
Do you know what the conversion would be if I used cacao powder instead of the nibs?
This sounds wonderful and I can't wait to try it. I will use a pitted date to sweeten.
OOh this looks good! Thanks, I'm going to try it. 🙂
I put a a tablespoon of cacao nibs with my coffee before brewing (the coffee & nibs brew together). Do you know if I am diminishing the nutrients by processing the nibs with heat?
Pb2 natures bounty chocolate protine powder ,frozen banana and a handful of baby spinach..the best smoothie ever…
I used your recipe to make my first green smoothie. I found Natural Zing cocao nibs at the health food store, so I tried them. For the peanut butter, I used 2 tablespoons of PB2 powdered peanut butter. (it blends well) It tasted great! I love the chocolate taste. I used 2 packets of Stevia in the raw too. I can't even taste the spinach. Wow!! I will definitely make it again. Plan on using the cacao nibs in other smoothies as well.
I added 1 tbsp of Baby Brain Organics to this delicious smoothie! You can get some on their website http://babybrainorganics.com/
Hamilton Beach Personal Blender, 14 oz – it is $15 at Amazon or Walmart. Perfect and inexpensive for fruit/veggie/milk based smoothies – i use frozen berries, bananas, rice protein powder and soy for my breakfast shakes. I use it every day and have been for about 3 years now. I like that you just take the blender cup off and take it with you! 🙂
You can also look into buying a refurbished vitamix to save $. Love mine!
Looks really good! I've never heard of cacao. I'll have to try this. Thanks!
As an alternative to peanut butter, I might try powdered peanut butter (e.g., PB2). You can get more — and therefore more peanuty taste — for the points.
Just tried it! Amazing.
I can't wait to try this smoothie….looks really good. I have switched from Blue Diamond almond milk to Silk ….Blue Diamond has carrageenan and there has been a lot of debate concerning this additive. It's in a lot of the food we are consuming so read your labels.
I have a Cuisinart immersion blender and a Vitamix. I use them both at least a couple of times a week. My favorite appliances!
I have a nutribullet as well and absolutely love it. My husband uses it as well and in finally eating fruits because if it! They had, and still may have a buy one get one deal going on directly from their website. I'm excited to try this smoothie.
I have the nutribullet and I absolutely love it! Blends whole veggies like carrots into a smooth consistency. I found Target to have the cheapest price. 🙂
Fresco, buono e sano!!!
This looks and sounds wonderful! I totally get what you mean about the bitter taste of the cacao nibs, it totally took me by surprise as well, and I find it best to use it as topping for yogurts and the like along with something sweet.
Loving the paperstraws as well! Might just have to try this out 🙂 x
yumm! I am totally making that!

so delicious looking! trying this in the AM fo sho 😉
I have Vitamix and love it – make soup in it as well as smoothies – breads too with the package I got. It is a little pricey but worth it and they give u a fantastic warrenty with no issues if you need to use it. I would definitely purchase another one. LOVE LOVE LOVE your site Gina.
I have the Magic Bullet Juicer and it works really well. Better price too than Vitamix!
Vitamix!! It is pricey, but totally worth it.
agree… love the Vitamix
I see you found a good use for your cacao nibs.:) I absolutely love to use cacao powder instead of cocoa in all recipes. Looks great!
I too have a ninja and have been very happy with it, as a blender and as a food processor.
I have a Ninja and it works great with ice.
I'm been stumped trying to find a decent blender for smoothies. Any recommendations? Love your site, by the way!
I love my Cuisinart Immersion Blender. I've used it pretty much every day for the past 2 years and it's still going strong. I will note though that I do not use ice, just frozen fruit.
p.s. it's also great for soups, etc. Just stick it in the pan and blend away. Super easy to clean up! If you are a Costco member they have a great deal right now for one that is $30ish.
I have both a Blendtec and a Vitamix, I love them both equally! They are pricey though, but to me it's worth every penny.
Gina … why do you have both blenders?? Do they each do their own separate thing???
I was lucky to get them to review them, they are currently both on my counter!
I have a Magic Bullet and a Nutribullet. The Nutribullet is best for smoothies because it really gets you that smooth texture. The Magic Bullet is better for quickly chopping and blending (salsa, bruschetta, sofrito, etc). If you have a 20% off coupon for Bed, Bath and Beyond you can get the Nutribullet for under $80. Hope this helps!
I did not have a lot of money to spend on a blender, but I needed one as my baby bullet that I was using went kaput. I went on Amazon and bought the Oster 6706 6-Cup Plastic Jar 10-Speed Blender. It was under $20! I have had it for two months now. I use it for smoothies every day, sometimes twice a day. It is a great, inexpensive blender that I'm glad I bought.
I love love love my magic bullet that I got for xmas. I use it for everything! but I love the to go containers that you blend in. That way I am only cleaning one item rather than the blender and the cups etc. The clean up is the winner for me. I never felt like I got a good clean on my blender, having to disassemble it every time, never feeling like the o ring was making a seal anymore.
I have a Ninja and it works great. It's a lot less expensive than a Blentec or Vitamix. I'm sure both of those are nicer but the Ninja works well for me and I use it to make smoothies daily. It also comes with to-go / single serve containers.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the suggestions.
